This UI was an R&D exploration, designed to be interaction-friendly to fit within the context of the autonomous car, for users in self-driving mode. The system provides data on travel, vehicle information, driver safety, and entertainment.
Quantitative surveys, user interviews, rapid prototyping, heuristic evaluation, usability testing.
Both quantitative and qualitative research uncovered that in self-driving cars people mostly want to listen to music, know that they are safe, and get to where they are going. Essentially, exactly what people want from driving cars. Participants indicated that productivity tasks like email and other work-related tasks, are preferable to perform on a laptop. People would also have access to their smartphones, so features native to those would be superfluous.
The UI therefore focussed on music streaming, navigation and vehicle information, whilst in self-driving mode. Overall, the benefits of the UI is a more intuitive and flexible user interface that works in unison with the features of the autonomous car.
